Hysterosalpingography (HSG) / Saline Infusion Sonohysterography
Hysterosalpingography, or HSG for short, is a medical test that helps doctors check a woman’s reproductive system, specifically her uterus and fallopian tubes. It’s often done if a woman is having trouble getting pregnant or has certain gynecological issues.
Here’s how it works:
Special Dye: The doctor will put a special dye into the uterus through the cervix. This dye is visible on X-rays.
X-ray Pictures: As the dye flows through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes, X-ray pictures are taken. This helps the doctor see if there are any blockages or abnormalities in the reproductive organs.
Diagnosis: Based on the X-ray images, the doctor can figure out if there are any issues that might be preventing pregnancy or causing other problems.
In simpler terms, HSG is a test that uses a liquid to take pictures of a woman’s uterus and fallopian tubes to see if everything is working correctly in her baby-making parts.
Saline Infusion Sonography
Saline Infusion Sonohysterography, or Saline Infusion Sonography (SIS), is another test that doctors use to look at the inside of a woman’s uterus. This test helps find problems like polyps, fibroids, or abnormal growths.
Here’s how it works:
Ultrasound: Instead of X-rays, SIS uses ultrasound, which is like taking pictures with sound waves.
Saline Solution: The doctor puts a small amount of saltwater (saline solution) into the uterus through the cervix.
Ultrasound Pictures: The saline makes the inside of the uterus expand a bit, and the ultrasound creates detailed pictures of the uterine lining. This helps the doctor spot any abnormalities.
Diagnosis: The doctor can then figure out if there are any issues that might be causing trouble getting pregnant.
So, in simple terms, SIS is a test that uses sound waves and saltwater to take pictures of the inside of a woman’s uterus to check for any unwanted guests or growths that could be causing her trouble.
Both HSG and SIS are important tools that doctors use to understand what might be going on inside a woman’s reproductive system and help them find the best way to address any issues.
